The Most Anticipated Sci-Fi Films of 2019

Posted Filed under

Two thousand eighteen was a fruitful year for the film industry and science fiction genre filmmaking in particular. In February, Alex Garland presented his mind-blowing sci-fi horror film Annihilation. Though some critics deemed the movie too brainy for box office, its original plot, setting, and brilliant acting of Hollywood’s renowned actresses fascinated viewers and granted Garland’s sophomore movie a resounding success. Annihilation offers an unexpected perspective on such issues as control and power, social withdrawal, and depression. In March, Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One appeared on the big screen. The film immerses us into the realm of virtual reality and encourages us to ponder the role of popular culture. This movie follows a bunch of teenagers who decide to embark on a dangerous gaming quest to get a valuable prize. Though overtly commercial and lacking the “speculativeness,” inherent in the sci-fi movie genre, Spielberg’s movie is replete with fun moments and unexpected plot twists. Watching Ready Player One is an excellent way to relax and imagine what it’ll be like to distance yourself from real-life problems and live in a video game. So, if you’re a student tired of homework, projects, and boring lectures, it’s high time you contacted PapersOwl UK, a reliable online essay writing service, got your urgent assignments done, and started enjoying this fun-filled movie. Among the post-apocalyptic drama thrillers of 2018 such hits as John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place and Susanne Bier’s Bird Box should be mentioned. In both movies, people have to take control of their sense and speech organs not to let evil monsters hunt them down. Though the future is envisioned as gloomy and foreboding, both films celebrate humanity, compassion, love, friendship, family values, and end on an optimistic note.

Every time we start a new sci-fi movie, a feeling of great anticipation overwhelms us. Last year pleased us with high-class sci-fi hits. We hope in 2019, filmmakers will do even better and won’t disappoint us with their new creations. Below is the list of the most anticipated sci-fi movies of 2019 you won’t want to miss.

Zombieland 2

If you’re a connoisseur of sci-fi horror comedies, you’ll surely like the sequel to 2009 Zombieland. Ruben Fleischer welcomes you back to Zombieland to follow the fantastic four crusading to survive in the world teeming with the walking dead. In Zombieland 2, the heroes will confront the new strains of zombies that have evolved and thus became stronger and wittier than before. So, our old friends will need to mobilize all the resources and prepare for an epic fight with hordes of blood-thirsty creatures.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

The latest attempt to resuscitate the Godzilla franchise was taken in 2014. We don’t know whether Gareth Edwards predicted his Godzilla’s success, but the film grossed almost $100 million at the box office on the first opening weekend. No wonder, filmmakers decided to create a continuation of Godzilla’s story. The upcoming 2019 monster movie Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a sequel to Godzilla shot by Edwards, who, by the way, decided not to return to the project. Still, Godzilla fans shouldn’t be upset because of that. Edwards handed over the reins to Michael Dougherty known for his dark fantasy horror hits Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus. The sequel follows the attempts of crypto-zoologists to avert the threats posed by god-sized monsters headed by indestructible Godzilla. As humanity’s future is hanging by a thread, a group of selfless heroes defies the giants vying for supremacy and does their best to deter attacks of the mythical creatures. Such stars as Kyle ChandlerVera FarmigaMillie Bobby Brown,  Sally Hawkins,  and Aisha Hinds also promise to contribute to the upcoming movie’s commercial success. We’ll be able to check it on May 31st.

Code 8

Good films don’t necessarily should be blockbusters. An intriguing plot, talented actors, interesting and thought-provoking message are enough for creating a good film capable of attracting numerous viewers. In 2016, Jeff Chan released his debut low-budget sci-fi action film named Code 8. It is set in the dystopian future, where a certain percentage of earth’s population has developed supernatural abilities and turned into social castaways. In fact, the 2016 Code 8 was a teaser for the upcoming feature-length movie, whose release is scheduled for early 2019. The fundraising campaign amassed more than $2 million, which exceeded the filmmakers’ expectations and allowed them to increase their production budget manifold.  Now we’re looking forward to watching this promising sci-fi movie.

Replicate

Another movie that has a potential for becoming a 2019 sci-fi blockbuster is Replicate. It follows a group of amateur journalists setting out to make a web series about their native town. Still, as their work progresses, the young people realize that some of their townspeople are not what they seem to be. They have been replicated by some entities that are evidently up to no good. Don’t miss Replicate that is set to hit theatres on June 21st.

Pet Sematary

Our list of the most anticipated films would be incomplete without mentioning Stephen King’s adaptations, which seem to never go out of fashion. Scheduled for a release on April 5th is a movie called Pet Sematary. The remake of the 1989 film of the same name follows the Creed family that moves to a rural area when Mr. Creed is offered a new job as a doctor. Unluckily for the family, they happen to choose the worst possible place for living. There is an abandoned burial ground in the woods behind their house, which bodes ill for the newcomers. You won’t definitely want to miss the new adaptation of one of the most gruesome and macabre Kings’ novels of all time.
