Gambling has been a huge form of entertainment for many people over the past century, yet even before that, poker and other alternatives such as roulette were massively enjoyed. It makes sense that gambling movies would be relished within the community, as gambling just brings that hint of adrenaline and excitement that is often missing from our lives, right?
If you take a look at new customer offers for betting, it is evident they are becoming more rewarding as time passes. It’s kind of like movies too really, as the years pass they become more developed in terms of story line and context. The gambling scene changes every time, and that’s what makes movies even more special, every time they come out and get released. There are other reasons however, that explain why gambling movies are becoming more popular by the year, and we have listed a few of the reasons further, down below.
Why Gambling?
First thing is first, gambling has long been hailed and loved within western culture. As the years have gone by. Yet, what often gets neglected, is the fact that gambling never really is something that is referred to as a dangerous pastime. Sure, it’s all fun and games, but it can also be something that can cost you quite a lot of money if you do it wrong. While the odds are more out of your favour than they are in your favour, the movies always (obviously) romanticise the idea that everyone can be a winner if they set their mind to it. And that’s it right there. The play on being a winner is an obsession, and everyone enjoys watching that story, and seeing a winner being created from the storyline.
While there will always be more winners than losers in gambling movies, when there are losers, it becomes an epic dramatic moment that becomes good to watch. So, either way, a winner or a loser, gambling gives us that entertainment fix that we perhaps hold back from ourselves, being that we do not want to lose out on some ‘once in a moment’ occurrence that seems too good to be true.
Excitement
So, more now into the factors that make gambling movies interesting and popular to watch, is the excitement that comes from them. A gambling movie will always build an entire storyline around a concept that builds up with suspense, and gets you excited over what is going to happen next. The rush that appears and continues to build up throughout the movie, is what makes the movies retain your attention, and for you to ultimately keep going in the long term. That same feeling never often appears in real life too, so the audience will continuously keep seeking that same excitement, with hopes that they can continue to get that excitement fix, each and every time they watch gambling movies. You have to remember that, as a viewer of a gambling movie, we always expect to see a winner, and it’s very similar to a fairy tale movie, where we expect to see the happily ever after. It is addictive, and therefore, that is the reason why people continue to watch each and every time.
There is also a case of where the audience will put themselves in the shoes of the main character and imagine the same scenario happening to them. Who would not do that? Especially when you think of lavish movies like Casino Royale, where James Bond comes out as the winner, and always gets the girls? It seems too good to be true, but we all dream, don’t we? Gambling movies give us that opportunity to link our emotions and longing to the storyline, and that is what keeps us hooked to the screen and keeps the movies very much alive and memorable. They evoke many emotions all at once, which not many movies have a capability to do.
Comedy
You should never take lightly the comedic effect that gambling movies can bring to you by the way. Not all gambling movies happen to have a comedic effect, but when they do, they can really make the difference to a gambling movie. Sometimes, we admit, these movies can be far too intense to watch, especially with the build-up of drama and mystery that can be integrated within the movies. Lightening up the entire movie with something to laugh about, can give the audience just what they need essentially. It can also be super unexpected too, which is a nice surprise. For example, remember the blackjack scene from the Austin Powers movie? The mockery that was built up around his character, was light-hearted and very entertaining to watch. It was nice to see and watch that, as it was completely unexpected, and therefore welcomed upon watching by the audience.
Not all casino movies will use humour in the most obvious ways, meaning it is not light-hearted, and you will need to put more thought into it. The Martin Scorsese film Casino, uses the type of humour we are talking about. It’s quite dark and essentially brings in something that will be appreciated by fans. The main character Ace showcases exactly that within the movie scenes. Within the scene where Ace throws out a patron of the casino, the very same person lashes insults and obscene words, only to then be a player who is later revealed to be a best friend of Ace’s acquaintance in the movie, Nicky.
This type of humour becomes very common for Scorsese movies, and is very different to the other movies that we made references to, earlier above. It shows enough how gambling is a world that can take many turns, and that is what makes gambling movies even more exciting and entertaining to watch. They serve a common purpose, and for that reason, gambling movies are something that everyone wants to watch, and why they become more popular by the year.
