Tom Ellis (Miranda, EastEnders) plays Mark in The Fades, writer Jack Thorne’s new fantasy horror series, which begins on BBC Three tonight.
CultBox recently caught up with Tom at the show’s launch in London to find out more…
Can you tell us a bit about your character?
“I play Mark in The Fades. In the first episode, you meet Mark at a point in his life where he is living with his wife but they haven’t been together for some time. And unbeknownst to Mark, his wife goes missing and he’s suddenly in the frame as chief suspect for her disappearance and possible murder.”
What attracted you to the role?
“The Fades came along at a strange point this year when a few things were happening for me, then the script came through and I read it and immediately I phoned my agent up and said ‘I really want to do this, whatever happens, this is what I want to do’. It was one of the most exciting, imaginative and – if it was realised properly – potentially one of the most brilliant things on British screens for quite some time, made by British people.
“Just the concept of it was high, the writing was so youthful and funny and understated. Opportunities to do something like this don’t come along very often, so when the opportunity came along I jumped at it.”
Would you be up for returning for Series 2?
“I don’t think I’d have any doubt at all about seeing where it goes. What I recognise about this show is that each episode ends and you just go ‘I want do know more!’. I think you’re left like that at the end of the series, so as an actor and as a viewer I’d be intrigued to see where it goes in a second series.”
