Bobby Lockwood stars as Rhydian in CBBC’s new fantasy action drama, Wolfblood, which tells the story of two seemingly ordinary teenagers, who are secretly part of a mysterious race who have lived among humans for centuries by disguising their abilities and blending in.
Rhydian has had a difficult life; he has been in more foster homes than he can remember and has never had anyone on his side before.
Can you tell us about the show?
“Wolfblood is a really exciting show that will be on CBBC later in the year. It’s a fantasy drama about some seemingly ordinary young people, Maddy and Rhydian. Maddy seems like an ordinary girl but she has a secret, she’s a wolfblood! She thinks she’s the only wolfblood in her school… until new boy Rhydian turns up and things get a lot more complicated.
“It’s hard being a teenager, but you just try being wolfblood teenager! It’s harder than you think to act normal when you’ve got some amazing abilities…”
What is a wolfblood?
“Wolfbloods are strong, fast and have incredible vision, sense of smell and hearing, they also change into wolves every full moon, which is something they have to hide so they can blend into normal society. You think that might be easy? When you can hear or smell something from a mile away, run twice as fast as anyone else it might be just a little bit difficult to blend into the crowd.
“As wolfbloods are scared of being found out they can’t tell anybody! Not even their closest friends. After your first transformation you can change at any time, especially when scared, angry or threatened, which, being a teenager, can happen a lot!”
What’s your character like?
“He always has his guard up because no one understands him. Growing up with all these abilities and no one to talk to cut him off from everybody else and he prefers to keep himself to himself. He has no idea why he can do all these things that others can’t, and I think that scares him a little. Being the new boy at school to, he certainly doesn’t want all that attention, so he hides his abilities. Most of the time…”
How do Maddy and Rhydian get on?
“Maddy is the first person Rhydian has ever met that is like him. He thought he was the only person in the world like this, so to find out there is not only one other person but many more worldwide, astounds him. Maddy is pleased to have someone she can hopefully confide in and Rhydian is glad to finally have a friend. But as they are finding out more about themselves and wolfbloods they realise that not everyone feels the same way about how they should live.”
What’s it like on set?
“It was really hard work as we have a really busy filming schedule, but it is so much fun. It’s such an amazing job to have – the cast and crew are like one big family and we have such a laugh, but at the end of the day everyone is also really serious about producing the best possible programme we can – there’s a real buzz about it. I hope that comes across on screen and that people enjoy the series when they see it on CBBC.”
What would you do if you were a wolfblood in real life?
“The very first thing I would do is get on a plane to Jamaica and give Usain Bolt a run for his money!”
Is it hard to act like a wolf?
“It’s fun! It’s obviously quite scary and exciting for Rhydian and Maddy when they transform so we have to make sure we’re portraying that properly so the viewers understand what they’re going through, and feel like it’s a real and exciting experience.”
How long did it take to film the series?
“Months! We shoot up to around a dozen scenes a day, but sometimes less if there are lots of complicated shots or props and so on. Sometimes it would take a whole morning to do one scene if there was a stunt! Even though it takes a long time to film, it has flown by. I miss everyone now we’ve finished filming.”
Who are your mates on set?
“We’re all like one big family, that’s the crew as well. Everybody gets on so well. All the cast had so much fun, on and off set. We spent almost all week together!”
