Reece Noi stars as Levi in Hit & Miss, Sky Atlantic’s new drama series about a contract killer with a big secret: she’s a transgender woman.
Train. Kill. Receive payment. Repeat. This has been the routine for Mia ever since she was taken under the wing of Eddie, a long-standing resident of the criminal underworld, and transformed into a sharp-shooting assassin. Fate, however, ensures things don’t stay the same for long, and the arrival of a bombshell-laden letter from her ex, Wendy, changes Mia’s life forever.
Created by Paul Abbott (Shameless), Hit & Miss is currently airing on Tuesday nights at 10pm on Sky Atlantic.
How would you describe your character?
“I play Levi, who’s 15 and the eldest son of Wendy. He’s quiet, a little antisocial and he’s got one close friend. Mind you, all the family are quiet and a little antisocial – their mum’s just died. Levi is shy, and he doesn’t really know to deal with people outside the family much.
“He’s a farmhand and quite insular. I don’t think he knows who his dad is – we assume he and Riley have got the same dad.”
How does he fit in to the family set-up?
“He’s sort of the father figure until Mia comes along. That throws him a little: he’s quite threatened by her. Which he would be anyway because she’s a transsexual. And he doesn’t quite know what her motives are, what she’s trying to do and how that changes his relationship within the family. He feels a little bit undermined.
“She comes in and says this is what’s going to happen but that’s easy for her – she’s naturally in control. That’s what he dislikes. It’s just been him and Riley before. Even when his mum was alive she was quite ill so they had to keep everything going. He probably feels like he’s not really getting the credit he deserves, when Mia comes in and takes over.”
How would you describe Hit & Miss?
“It’s a dark drama about a family. That’s the simplistic way to put it. Because when I try and tell my friends it’s about a transsexual hit woman I tend to lose them. When I got the breakdown while I was auditioning I kind of laughed. But when you get the scripts there isn’t ever a point where you go, ‘That’s unbelievable. As if.’
“It’s quite a far-fetched story essentially but it’s written well enough so you just think it’s about this family. They’re not messed up in that they’re very close, but they’re slightly dysfunctional in the way that the mum had a few different men, they’ve got different dads, there’s the whole thing with Riley and John – which Levi doesn’t actually know about. We were not the most conventional family but we got on, we were close knit… and then this ex boyfriend of our mum turns up as a woman.”
As an actor at the start of your career what’s it like to learn that the series is going to star a major Hollywood actor?
“I wasn’t expecting anything because I’ve done things before with massive names and you tend to find that the majority of the time they’re never how you expect. It’s weird because obviously Chloë, at the risk of sounding cringey, is just another cast member and we all get on.”
