‘Mad Dogs’: Series 3 episode guide

Posted Filed under

It’s rare for a holiday to outstay its welcome but, for Woody (Beesley), Quinn (Glenister), Baxter (Simm) and Rick (Warren), this one definitely has. No surprise given ‘highlights’ so far have involved pint-sized assassins, drug cartels and expat gangsters. Quality R&R isn’t on the menu this time around either, as creator and writer Cris Cole prepares a fresh tangle of twists to trip up the boys.

The foursome’s run of bad luck culminated in the Series 2 finale with the law catching up with them in Morocco, and they’re not in a great place in this comeback episode.

Enduring various forms of interrogation in what appears to be a dilapidated prison in the middle of the desert, Woody, Quinn, Baxter and Rick’s knack for trouble is only set to continue. A new face is also thrown into the mix in the form of feisty fellow prisoner Mercedes, played by Jaime Winstone.

Jumping ahead, this second episode takes place two years after the boys were dropped off in South Africa and told not to contact each other. They’ve all rebuilt their lives under new identities, but with varying degrees of success.

Rick is now a small-time drug dealer and near-junkie; Baxter has kick-started his legal career using fake documents; Quinn runs a bar and, after hours, is enjoying an affair with a French diplomat’s wife; while Woody has moved in with his South African girlfriend and, Robin Hood-style, buys black market pharmaceuticals for the local hospitals. It’s only a matter of time before their covers are blown, however, and the gang are soon reunited when Baxter uncovers some key information and, quite possibly, a route home.

Things seem to be on the up for Woody, Quinn, Baxter and Rick, a sure sign that their situation is about to spiral. The boys are back together and on their way to the British Consulate to find out if they’re in the clear, with an unexpected lock-in and the presence of the police suggesting that the kill contract is very much active.

It’s a tight spot that the foursome just about squeeze out of – especially when Rick’s still wearing his tag – leading Quinn to ask a favour of his well-connected French beau. She knows an American former CIA contact who might be able to help, but the catch is that he lives in the middle of nowhere on the other side of South Africa. The return of a familiar face with a keen sense of direction couldn’t have been better timed then.

Arriving at Lazaro’s empty house, Woody, Quinn, Baxter and Rick kill some time by sharing a few home truths and playing the blame game, resulting in a playground-style scuffle. A machine gun-toting Lazaro isn’t best pleased by the behaviour of his uninvited guests but, after hearing their story, is happy to help them out, using his satellite phone to log on to the CIA and delete each of their profiles.

They’re free. And all the American wants in return is for the foursome to do his dirty laundry (seriously), hell, he even throws in some celebratory hallucinogenic fruit. When something seems too good to be true, it’s normally because it is, and with a franchise-finishing fourth run on the way later this year, it’s not too much of a spoiler to say that the boys’ nightmare isn’t over just yet.
