Anna Friel is set to play the mother of an 11-year-old transgender child in upcoming ITV mini-series Butterfly.

The drama explores the issues surrounding gender identity, especially as a young child. When Max, who was born male, decides to live life as girl in public as well as at home, [he] and [his] parents must adjust to their new reality.

Polly Hill, ITV head of drama, said: “Butterfly is a beautiful story about a young boy on the cusp of puberty who doesn’t feel comfortable in his own body. It’s a heartwarming and emotional script from Tony Marchant that focuses upon gender identity and one boy’s search to be recognised for who he really is.”

Award-winning screenwriter Tony Marchant is behind the project, while Friel will also co-produce alongside Louise Sutton and Caroline Hollick.

“It is great to work with Tony again on such a moving and warm drama that will touch the hearts of viewers with the universal themes of acceptance, inclusivity and unconditional love,” said Nicola Shindler, head of RED Production Company. “Tony’s got a real knack of creating real and relatable characters whose stories strike a chord but also have such drama, making his work so compelling.

“ITV audiences are in for a real treat!”
