HBO has announced a brand new TV adaptation of Baldur’s Gate, here’s everything we know so far about the series:
What’s it about?
The fantasy RPG game made waves upon the latest release of Baldur’s Gate 3 in 2023, riding the wave of D&D’s lockdown revival. The game reached over 875,000 peak concurrent players on Steam with over 20 million copies sold, it’s not hard see how the property is ripe for adaptation in the eyes of studios. Although there’s very little currently out on the specifics of what the plot of the series would involve, fans are anticipating high fantasy, dense characters and adventurous storylines.
Who’s behind it?
Craig Mazin, the co-creator and showrunner of The Last of Us, another video-game-to-tv adaptation, will be an executive producer on this project. Mazin places himself amongst the millions of Baldur’s Gate fans, stating that he’s sunk over a thousand hours into the game itself. Given this alignment with the fandom, and the mainstram success of The Last of Us‘ series, Mazin has currently given no sign for the awaiting fan’s faith to waver. Alongside Mazin, Jacqueline Lesko (Crazy, Stupid, Love.), Cecil O’Connor (The Fall Guy) and Gabriel Marano (Scrabble) will also serve as executive producers.
