Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy leaving Amazon Prime (Angel has already gone)

Posted Filed under

Buffy The Vampire Slayer fans be warned — it looks like the show is leaving Amazon Prime later this month (around the 19th)

There’s nothing like a binge watch of a familiar favourite show, and we’re sure Buffy The Vampire Slayer is dear to many Cultbox readers. BUT. If you want to watch your favourite stories (maybe when Cordelia and Xander first got together, when Buffy and Angel were possessed by ghosts, when Willow met Oz, Drusilla and Spike…) on Amazon Prime, they’re leaving in the next few days (by October 19 on our calculations).

While we know titles sometimes drift in and out of Prime, this is all seven series of vampire slaying goodness. When we noticed, we immediately checked on Angel — he’s already left! Of course you can still rent titles, but it’s not the same (and there are 144 episodes of Miss Gellar’s show).

How do I watch Buffy in the future?

Just like when the first seasons of Lucifer left Prime in the UK (they all went in the US some time ago), it’s all about licensing. Fox owns Buffy (and Angel) and now Disney owns Fox. You guessed it — both shows will continue on Disney+ as part of the huge package of Star titles. Good news if you already subscribe, and a challenge otherwise. We don’t see this being reversed any time soon, and it’s all part of the realignment in the SVOD market we’ve been tracking for some time, and looks likely to continue for some time.

What about the Buffy reboot?

The much talked about in 2018 reboot has gone very quiet recently (and Joss Whedon allegedly has various problems on his plate, many of which former cast members have commented on publicly). As and it when it does happen, we suspect it will go straight to Disney.
