Off the back of the success of Humans in particular, Channel 4 is continuing to invest in science fiction. And in conjunction with Hulu in the US, it’s co-funding The First.

The First will follow the first human mission to Mars, told from the perspective of the astronauts themselves and their families back on Earth. It’s created by Beau Willimon (House Of Cards), and a full first series of the show has been ordered.

Furthermore, it’s landing something of a casting coup by attracting Sean Penn to star in the lead role. It’s a notable first leading role in a TV show for the Oscar-winning actor.

Production on The First will begin before the end of the year, and it’ll premiere on both Hulu and Channel 4 at some point in 2018. We’ll keep you posted…
