Community the Movie – lots of optimistic noises from the cast (updated)

Now Community‘s creator Dan Harmon has spoken on the subject.

(Updated 24/08/22): Further to the recent reports of cast members Alison Brie and Yvette Nicole Brown making positive comments, show creator Dan Harmon has gone on record, confirming there’s a story in place for a Community Movie.

Dan Harmon - creator of Community

Speaking to The Wrap, while promoting the upcoming season of Rick & Morty, Harmon said that negotiations are underway:

“I’ll confirm what Alison [Brie] said which is that legitimacy is here, conversations and agreements are happening. There’s a story – who knows if we’ll end up sticking to it, but it was something we had to compile in order to take it out and court various venues. And now negotiations happen.”

However, despite urging caution, he couches the potential Community movie in the area of when rather than if:

“Now, I say that with such caution, because sometimes the audience is like, ‘So that means what a year, two years?’ I could have said what I just said three years ago and it would have been almost as accurate, and can you imagine if I had said that three years ago? That’s me setting people up for three years of abusive neglect and making them feel forgotten, and it’s hard enough to just say nothing.”

“When you put the percentage chances together it’s like you have to account for maybe the world blowing up or another virus happening. But as far as the industry is concerned, this is a matter of when and not if, for sure.”

It certainly all sounds very positive, with Harmon making similar comments to Newsweek too:

“There is an outline for it. There’s a product put together and pitched out in the world. I guess that’s how real it is.”

We’ll keep you posted on the Community movie.

Community the Movie – lots of optimistic noises from the cast

More positive noises from the cast as Yvette Nicole Brown says it’s “a matter of logistics”.

It’s been a while since we’ve spotted anything on the subject of Community…  until this week.

The seminal sitcom about a group of mis-matched students at a Community College landed on NBC back in 2009. However, it enjoyed a rocky ride, with behind the scenes challenges, cancellation and then a sixth and final backed by the now defunct Yahoo Screen back in 2015.

Starring Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Ken Jeong and Chevy Chase, the show was the launchpad for the careers of Alison Brie (GLOW) and Danny Glover (Atlanta, Solo).

Episodes were directed by the Russo Brothers, later of MCU fame, and Justin Lin (The Fast and the Furious franchise). It also enjoyed an embarrassment of guest stars along the way including Levar Burton, Brie Larson, John Goodman and Jack Black.

Created by Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty), Community ran for 110 episodes over ten seasons. Incredibly meta-aware, its fans have long been in pursuit of the much-vaunted goal of #sixseasonsandamovie. A gag in an early episode, it’s become somewhat of a mission statement.

“There’s been some talks”

Building on comments from Joel McHale that he was “optimistic” back in June, Alison Brie spoke to the The Wrap Podcast this week. She said:

“You know what, I’ll say it. There’s been movement. There’s been some talks. People are talking and certain things — wheels are turning. I said it!”

And continued:

“I’m saying there are legitimate conversations that are happening. Whether or not they will ever turn into an actual movie — I would love it if they did, and I hope that they do. But the fact alone that actual real conversations are happening is I think the most progress we’ve ever made on that front.”

“So, I believe that it’s going to happen…”

Armed with the comments of Alison Brie, Collider’s Maggie Lovitt broached the subject with Yvette Nicole Brown at the LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation press run where she acknowledged the practicalities:

“I know that, as Alison [Brie] said the other day, there’s been a lot of talks, everybody… This is the thing that we’ve been saying for years now, it’s not that there’s a lack of desire. We all would love to do it, but everyone has just branched off and done so many different things. It’s like how do you work out a schedule where you can get a Donald Glover [Troy], or a Gillian Jacobs [Britta], or Danny Pudi [Abed] all together in one place at the same time again? So, I think that is the biggest jigsaw puzzle to put together, but every puzzle can find its way to completion. So, I believe that it’s going to happen, I don’t know when, but there are talks right now, currently.”

Let’s keep fingers, toes and whatever else crossed. We believe this is going to happen!

In the meantime, all six seasons of Community are currently available to stream on Netflix in the UK.
