Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock – Apple TV+ drops a trailer

The streamer shares a familiar song from its upcoming Fraggle Rock series.

The beloved Fraggles are returning to television, reinvented for Apple TV+ after more than thirty years.

The original show Fraggle Rock saw the muppet cousins living a generally carefree life, occasionally interacting with other creatures in their environment, the industrious Doozers, the furry humanoid Gorgs and the silly creatures (or human beings).

The new series promises the return of the classic line-up; Gobo, Red, Boober, Mokey, Wembley and, of course, Uncle Travelling Matt will all appear. Apple’s press release tells us we can look forward to “…hilarious, epic adventures about the magic that happens when we celebrate and care for our interconnected world.”

Of course, the clever thing about the original show was that the ‘silly creature’ segments were tailored internationally; in the UK, that meant a lighthouse keeper called The Captain (Fulton Mackay) and his dog Sprocket. For later seasons, after Mackay’s death, he was replaced by the captain’s nephew PK (John Gordon Sinclair) and his son, BJ (Simon O’Brien). There were different versions for the North American, French and German versions, though all along the same lines, but there’s no suggestion of anything similar in the new version.

Fraggle Rock: Back to Fraggle Rock debuts on Friday, January 21, 2022. The new series is comprised of 13 episodes and made by The Jim Henson Company in association with New Regency.

Additionally, the original 88 episodes of Fraggle Rock are available on the streaming service, as well as a number of bonus specials.

If you fancy the comparison, here’s the opening sequence from the original (US version):

And we can’t resist a reminder of their starring role in the 2012 Ben Folds Five song ‘Do It Anyway”:
