The futuristic animation’s revival continues at Hulu for seasons 13 and 14.
Despite its eventful past of cancellations and resurrections, the future looks bright for the sci-fi comedy Futurama. The animated, futuristic sister show to The Simpsons was recently revived (again) for a run of 20 episodes by the US streamer Hulu. We’ve only seen half of them so far – a batch of 10 episodes presented as the show’s eleventh season.
However, now news has broken (via Variety) that the show’s run will continue with another 20 episodes.
Season 11 landed in July, and the remainder of that commission (aka Season 12) is due sometime in 2024. If that release rate is maintained, it’s reasonable to expect that the show will continue until at least 2026.
Futurama Lives! Cancellations and Revivals
Since its 1999 debut on Fox, Futurama has enjoyed a turbulent time. Initially cancelled after five series, it was revived with a run of straight-to-DVD movies in 2007 (referred to as Season 6).
In 2010, the show came back for a further four-season broadcast run at Comedy Central.
Now at Hulu, with one series in the bag and two more to come, the future of Futurama seems as secure as its ever been. Now surely that’s something worth celebrating…
Steaming in the US on Hulu, Futurama is available via Disney+ elsewhere, including in the UK.
Futurama‘s vocal cast includes John DiMaggio, Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr and David Herman.
The series is a creation of Matt Groening (The Simpsons), developed by Groening and David X. Cohen.
