BBC One has announced the commission of Doctor Foster, a new medical drama series by British playwright Mike Bartlett.
The channel has ordered five 60-minute episodes.
Creator Mike Bartlett commented: “My ambition with Doctor Foster is to put an intelligent, empowered woman at the centre of the drama and give her a huge battle to overcome, both in her personal and professional life. I am delighted to be working with Drama Republic and the BBC on this exciting drama that is truthful, complicated and thrilling.”
Executive producer Roanna Benn added: “We are so happy to be working on a series with Mike Bartlett, whose writing we have admired for a long time. What’s particularly exciting is to be making a drama about a relationship that has high stakes and jeopardy, and which also features a fantastic female lead. Her psychological and emotional journey is one we are totally gripped by.”
The official synopsis reads: “Doctor Jenny Foster is a woman in control: she is a trusted GP, the heart of her village, a woman people can trust. But Doctor Foster’s life is about to explode. When she suspects her husband has been having an affair, Doctor Foster is determined to find out the truth.
“She throws herself into an investigation that is going to propel her, her family, and even some of her patients, into chaos. Bit by bit, Doctor Foster uncovers secrets that shock her to the core. Now she has to choose how to react. One thing is certain – she is going to behave in ways she could never have imagined.”
