Ryan Coogler, writer and director of Black Panther, has signed on to pen and shoot a follow-up for Disney and Marvel. It seems the deal is officially done: Coogler will return to the fold to make Black Panther 2.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the story, revealing that Coogler has “quietly closed a deal to write and direct the sequel” to his $1.3 billion hit. Salaries aren’t mentioned, of course, but it seems safe to assume that – after reinventing the wheel with Black Panther and earning megabucks for the studio – Coogler will have got a significant uplift in earnings to come back and repeat the trick.
Before making Black Panther, Coogler made the acclaimed features Creed and Fruitvale Station. He didn’t return to direct Creed 2, but he is an executive producer on that project. He is currently working on a drama called Wrong Answer to direct, and a sequel to Space Jam to produce.
Black Panther 2 won’t release until after Captain Marvel, Avengers 4 and Spider-Man: Far From Home, so it’s hard to say what will be going on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the time. Of course, Chadwick Boseman – aka Black Panther himself – crumbled into dust at the end of Infinity War. Presumably, he’ll back in time to appear in Coogler’s sequel to Black Panther, which hasn’t announced its release date as of yet.
We’ll bring you more news as we hear it.
