The Danish political thriller’s third season takes up the story approximately two and a half years after Season 2 ended.

Richard Klein, Controller of BBC Four, commented: “I am delighted we can bring BBC Four viewers the third and final series of Borgen. Strong characters coupled with delicately woven personal and political storylines have kept our audiences hooked on a Saturday night, and the final season will be equally as engrossing.”

Camilla Hammerich, creative producer of Borgen, added: “We are so thrilled that BBC Four is on board for season three. And amazed at how the UK viewers have taken the series into their hearts. We very much look forward to introducing you to the final season.”

The official synopsis for Season 3 reads: “We last saw Danish Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg (Sidse Babett Knudsen) calling a general election. Two and a half years later, Lars Hesselboe (Søren Spanning) is leading the government and Birgitte Nyborg has left the political stage. Following the divorce from her husband in season two, Birgitte and her children are moving house, and her daughter Laura is much improved from the anxiety attacks which affected her when her mother was Prime Minister. Disillusioned with the political situation in Denmark, and in particular with the compromises the Moderate Party are making with the new government, her old friend and mentor, Bent Sejrø (Lars Knutzon) tries to persuade her to re-enter the arena…”
