Clark Gregg’s Agent Phil Coulson has been confirmed, alongside a lot of other familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to show up in the Captain Marvel movie.
Agent Coulson, of course, was first seen by movie fans in 2008’s Iron Man. He went on to appear in Thor, Iron Man 2 and The Avengers, before pivoting onto TV for Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.LD. series. Captain Marvel is set during the 1990s, so it takes place before all of that. Samuel L. Jackson will also appear, playing a younger-than-usual Nick Fury.
Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou have also been confirmed among the Captain Marvel cast. Pace and Hounsou previously appeared in Guardians Of The Galaxy, playing Kree warlord Ronan and his lackey Korath, respectively. Given the otherworldly elements of Captain Marvel and her comic book links to the Kree, it makes sense for Pace and Hounsou to reprise those roles here.
This bumper day of Captain Marvel casting news, which clearly confirmed the film’s connections to the wider MCU, also gifted us this synopsis…
“Based on the Marvel comic character first appearing in 1968, the story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
“The film stars Academy Award winner Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, with Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.”
Captain Marvel has a UK release date of March 8th, 2019. Production has just started on the movie, with Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck directing.
