Here’s a weird piece of casting news: Australian actor Damon Herriman is set to play the same role in two different projects, with Quentin Tarantino and David Fincher both casting him as the real-life murderer and cult leader Charles Manson.
Tarantino has cast Herriman as Manson in his feature film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (which also stars Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie), while Fincher has signed Herriman up for the same part in the second season of his Netflix drama Mindhunter (which stars Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Hannah Gross).
Tarantino’s project announced the casting of Herriman first, with The Wrap breaking the story on August 28th. Then, on August 30th, Collider broke the news that Herriman has nabbed the same role in Mindhunter.
Although the announcements came that way around, Collider’s report claims – citing unnamed sources – that Fincher’s project actually had Herriman signed on first. Neither Columbia Pictures (the company behind Tarantino’s film) nor Netflix has commented as of yet on this curious piece of casting, so it’s impossible to know – as an outsider – whether there is any bad blood between the projects.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood takes place in the 1960s, while Mindhunter season 2 is expected to be in the 1980s, so at least Herriman will get to play different parts of Manson’s life across the two projects.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood has a release date of July 26th 2019, while Mindhunter season 2 is yet to confirm its launch date.
Herriman’s previous credits include 100 Bloody Acres, The Water Diviner and J. Edgar, the latter of which saw him play another famous criminal (kidnapper Bruno Hauptmann).
We’ll keep you posted as this odd story develops and both projects inch closer to our screens.
