DC’s live-action Titans TV show will include Jason Todd

Here’s an interesting nugget of news for comic book fans: the upcoming live-action Titans TV series, which DC Entertainment is planning to launch on its own streaming service later this year, will feature the iconic character Jason Todd.

In the DC Comics source material, Jason Todd was the second of Bruce Wayne’s young wards to take up the mantle of Robin. In an iconic moment from comic book history, Jason was killed by a reader phone-in poll: in a narrowly contested vote, DC readers decided that the Joker should end Jason’s life. (The iconic story of the Joker killing Robin was alluded to recently in the films Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Suicide Squad.)

Years later, in the comics, Jason was resurrected. With a dark new streak to his personality, he became a brutal antihero known as the Red Hood. (The animated film Batman: Under The Red Hood and the video game Arkham Knight both adapted this story for the screen relatively recently.)

Jason Todd is a high profile comic book character, then, and this would mark his fully-fledged live-action debut. There has been no casting announcement yet, but this is exciting news nonetheless.

The news of Jason Todd’s inclusion in Titans comes from Heroic Hollywood. The news site claims that Jason “will come in about halfway through the thirteen episode season in the seventh episode titled ‘Jason Todd.’”

The Titans TV show is based on the Teen Titans comic book team, a group of younger superheroes who band together to fight evil. The show’s cast is already known to include Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson (the original Robin, who later became Nightwing), Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, Lindsey Gort as Detective Amy Rohrbach, Alan Ritchson as Hawk, Minka Kelly as Dove, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, Dwain Murphy as Negative Man, Jake Michaels as Cliff Steel, April Bowlby as Elasti-Girl, and Bruno Bichir as Dr. Niles Caulder. Geoff Johns, Akiva Goldsman and Greg Berlanti have worked on the scripts.

More news as we hear it.
