The Bluestone 42 actor, who plays police officer Fidel Best in BBC One’s Death in Paradise, will appear in Series 4 as a character named Jack Ross.

Executive producer Gareth Neame commented: “We are delighted to introduce another fantastic, dynamic character to Downton Abbey. His addition will bring interesting twists to the drama which we can’t wait for viewers to see in Series 4.”

Carr joins other new cast members Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Tom Cullen, Julian Ovenden, Nigel Harman, Joanna David and Dame Harriet Walter.

The fourth series is currently filming and will air on ITV later this year.
