Explorers: 1985 film being remade for TV, by Maniac’s Cary Fukunaga

Cary Fukunaga and David Lowery are teaming up to make a TV pilot episode based on the 1985 film Explorers for Paramount Television.

Cary Fukunaga comes to this project hot off the success of making Maniac for Netflix, and before he moves on to shoot Daniel Craig’s final James Bond movie.

David Lowery recently wrote and directed Pete’s Dragon and The Old Man & The Gun, and his next project is directing and co-writing a live-action Peter Pan movie.

Together, Fukunaga and Lowery will pen a script for Explorers, inspired by the eighties film that was written by Eric Luke and directed by Joe Dante. Eric Luke is helping out the TV adaptation as an executive producer.

The film starred Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix, and it focused on some movie-obsessed young friends building a spacecraft, leaving Earth and meeting some aliens. It’s believed that this spaceship-making plot will be carried over for the TV pilot, which is described by Deadline as having an “aspirational dramatic” feel.

Why is this curio of a film being dug up and redone by some very talented and in-demand writers at this particular moment? The answer is unclear, but we look forward to seeing what they come up with.

As we hear more, we’ll be sure to let you know.
