An animated TV series based on Gremlins is in the works at WarnerMedia, we’ve heard, which is destined to appear on Warner Bros’ upcoming streaming service. Much like Disney, Warners is planning to launch its own online viewing platform to rival the likes of Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime.
Gremlins, of course, is a cult horror movie that was directed by Joe Dante back in 1984. A sequel entitled Gremlins 2: The New Batch brought those frightful/cute critters back to our screens in 1990. The Gremlins franchise has also crossed over into the video game universe on a couple of occasions, and a few Gremlins were also spotted in 2017’s The LEGO Batman Movie.
And now, Variety has broken the news that Gremlins could be getting its first animated series.
Tze Chun – who has worked on the feature films Cold Comes The Night and Children Of Invention, and the TV shows Gotham and Once Upon a Time – will write and executive produce the Gremlins series, which is in development at Warner now.
Variety describes the show thusly: “The potential series is said to be a period piece that would follow Mr. Wing, the Chinese grandfather played in the films by Keye Luke, as a young man as he goes on adventures with the friendly Mogwai Gizmo.”
We’ll keep you posted as this show develops.
