Channel 4 has confirmed that Indian Summers will not be returning for a third season.
The period drama’s ten-part second season is currently airing on Sunday nights on Channel 4, but stiff competition from The Night Manager, Home Fires and Undercover has seen ratings fall to just 1 million viewers.
Telling the story of the final years of British colonial rule in India, Indian Summers was the biggest launch for a UK drama on Channel 4 in over two decades when it started in January 2015.

A Channel 4 spokesman commented: “We’re incredibly proud of Indian Summers and have loved having it in the schedule but with a number of new drama launches already confirmed for 2017 we’ve decided not to commission a third series.”
The series was originally envisaged by its makers to run for five seasons as a 50-part story.
