Joel McHale has nabbed a superhero role: he will play Starman in Stargirl, a new show that’s destined to live on the relatively new DC Universe streaming service.

With his impressive jawline and notable knack for playing quip-happy characters, it almost felt inevitable that McHale would eventually snare a live-action superhero role.

As an actor, McHale has been seen in Community, The Happytime Murders, The X-Files, Ted and The Informant! He has also done a fair bit of presenting/hosting work, recently headlining his own show that was winningly titled The Joel McHale Show With Joel McHale.

Variety broke the news of McHale’s casting as Starman in the Stargirl TV series, stating that this is a recurring role as well as describing the part thusly:

“A courageous and confident superhero, Starman is a member of the Justice Society of America. He wields a mysterious anti-gravity weapon called the cosmic staff and has a longtime sidekick named Stripesy, who is better known as Courtney Whitmore’s stepfather, Pat Dugan.”

Brec Bassinger will topline the show as Courtney Whitmore, aka Stargirl. Geoff Johns created the comic book character back in 1999, and he will write the pilot episode of the show as well as executive producing.
