Jumanji 3 lines up December 2019 release date

Posted Filed under

As many predicted, a sequel to Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle is pressing head. 2017’s film breathed fresh life into the Jumanji brand and made almost a billion dollars at the global box office, so it shouldn’t come as any surprise that Jumanji 3 has now been confirmed.

Better yet, we even have a release month: earlier this week, Sony chief Tom Rothman revealed at CinemaCon that Jumanji 3 will reach cinemas in time for Christmas 2019.

This positioning will pit Jumanji against Star Wars again. Welcome To The Jungle went up against The Last Jedi last year, and did surprisingly well; it may not have topped the box office leaderboard in its first week of release, but Jumanji steadily found its audience to the tune of $950 million in worldwide ticket sales.

It’s not clear yet what the plot of Jumanji 3 will be, but we do know that Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Jack Black and Kevin Hart will all be reprising their roles. Scott Rosenberg, who was one of four credited writers on Welcome To The Jungle, is currently listed as the only writer working on its sequel. It’s unclear at this point whether Chris McKenna will return to direct, but given the success of Welcome To The Jungle, it seems safe to assume that he will at least have first refusal on the gig.

We’ll bring you more news on Jumanji 3 (or Jumanji 2, if you only count the modern ones) as and when we hear it.
