King Gary: BBC orders full series from Tom Davis

Having piloted the show last year, the BBC is opting to press ahead with a full series of King Gary. Here’s everything you need to know…

Created by Tom Davis and James De Frond, the British comedy series King Gary stars Tom Davis, Laura Checkley, Simon Day, Camille Coduri, Laura Checkley, Neil Maskell, Romesh Ranganathan, Dustin Demri-Burns, Lisa McGrillis, Mim Shaikh and Emma Sidi.

The BBC has described the show thusly: “The story follows childhood sweethearts Gary and Terri King, a husband and wife comedy double act, and their aspirations to achieve social acceptance and moderate material success in competitive suburbia. This, accompanied by drama queen Gary’s constant need to impress his prehistoric old school Dad, Big Gary, and attempt to fill his big boots, equals a massive ‘try hard’ douchebag.”

Tom Davis said this about the full series order: “James and I are honoured to be given the opportunity to bring the world we’ve grown up around to BBC One. We were both blown away with the tip top response to the pilot and can’t wait to get cracking with the series. We love writing these characters and it’s going to be an absolute joy to muck about in their world.”

And the BBC’s comedy commissioning boss, Shane Allen, added this: “King Gary is big on laughs, big on heart and big on talent. Landing a mainstream family sitcom with a modern tone is a tough nut to crack but these scripts are bursting with great lines and well-earned set pieces”, said the BBC’s Controller of Comedy Commissioning Shane Allen, who commissioned the series. “We look forward to Gary and Terri bringing cheer to a year of bafflement.”

The full series of King Gary will arrive in 2020, and we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
