Paddy Considine (Pride) will join the cast as the representative of a force beyond anything Shelby has previously encountered, alongside Dina Korzun (Last Resort) and Jan Bijvoet (Cordon) as refugees from a foreign conflict who desperately need Tommy Shelby’s help.
Season 2 concluded last November on BBC Two.
Returning cast members include Cillian Murphy (Inception), Helen McCrory (Skyfall), Paul Anderson (Legend), Sophie Rundle (An Inspector Calls) and Joe Cole (Pressure), reprising their roles in the Shelby family.
Joe Cole is once again joined by his real-life brother, Finn Cole (Inspector Lewis), as his on-screen cousin, Michael.
Belgian director, Tim Mielants, whose series, Cordon was recently remade in the US as Containment, will direct all episodes and Simon Maloney makes his debut as producer.
Cillian Murphy commented: “It’s the sign of a great show when by the second or third season it’s richer than ever. The writing this year is the strongest it’s ever been. It’s off the charts.”
Creator Steven Knight added: “I am genuinely thrilled at the prospect of Season 3. I think it will be the best yet. Lots of things familiar but lots of things are new. It’s still a Birmingham story and it always will be. Now, it has international consequences. I can’t wait to see it myself.”
