The period crime drama was axed by BBC One after two series in December.
However, the producers were rumoured to be in talks with potential backers, including Amazon’s video-on-demand company LoveFilm, to fund a third series which would premiere online before airing on BBC One.
Production company Tiger Aspect UK tweeted this cryptic message: “Ever on the hunt, Fred best smells a story. Something rising from the earth once more…”

The BBC announced last year: “We are very proud of Ripper Street which has enjoyed two highly ambitious series on BBC One. However, the second series didn’t bring the audience we hoped and in order to make room for creative renewal and new ideas it won’t be returning.”
Actor Jerome Flynn, who played Sergeant Bennet Drake, added: “We’re all in absolute shock because it’s a wonderful job and we feel like it’s kind of this unfinished work.”
