The second season of The A Word has started shooting in the Lake District.

Starring Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who), Lee Ingleby (Our Zoo), Morven Christie (Grantchester), Greg McHugh (Fresh Meat) and Vinette Robinson (Sherlock), alongside newcomer Max Vento, the drama series launched on BBC One in March 2016.

The official synopsis reads: “[Season 2] picks up two years on from where we left it and Joe (Max Vento) is changing. Now age seven, he has begun to look at the world and find he doesn’t fit in.”

Writer and creator Peter Bowker commented: “Autistic is a word Joe has heard but can’t yet understand. Different is what he feels, and fears might be something bad. It’s up to the whole family to help Joe make sense of who he is and his place in the world. But to do that, they must first be honest about themselves…”

The A Word will return to BBC One this autumn.

Bowker previously hinted: “If the first series was about diagnosis and denial then the second series is about the journey that is undertaken when you ‘go public’ about the fact that your child is different.”
