Following the rollicking success of Star Trek: Discovery season 1, it should come as no surprise that CBS All Access has ordered a second season of the show. However, it may come as a surprise that CBS has not yet nailed down a release window for the showrunners to aim for with Star Trek: Discovery season 2.
Speaking at WonderCon in California, showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg admitted that – although CBS has ordered 13 new episodes – the network has not yet set a target release date. This could, perhaps, be due to the fact that Discovery season 1 took longer than expected to be produced, and several announced release dates were missed.
Harberts and Berg are set to start shooting next month, so at least we can be sure that these 13 episodes will be made. It will be interesting to see whether, as with season 1, CBS extends the season to 15 episodes at some point during the production phase.
Additionally, Harberts and Berg revealed a ‘secret scene’ from the Star Trek: Discovery season 1 finale. This scene confirms a popular fan theory, regarding the involvement in Discovery of Starfleet’s ‘black ops’ division, Section 31:
