After just six episodes have aired, Star Trek: Discovery has been renewed for a second season by its US network CBS All Access.

The show broke previous records for subscriber sign-ups in one day, week and month, reports Deadline, and has been met with positive reviews from Star Trek fans.

Marc DeBevoise, president and COO for CBS Interactive, said: “In just six episodes, Star Trek: Discovery has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise.

“This series has a remarkable creative team and cast who have demonstrated their ability to carry on the Star Trek legacy. We are extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished and are thrilled to be bringing fans a second season of this tremendous series.”

The first ‘chapter’ of season one will end with the November 12 episode, with the remaining six episodes to air in January 2018. The now-confirmed second season will likely air next autumn.
