Stranger Things season 4 filming to restart in September

Stranger Things will return to Netflix for a fourth season. Eventually…

Stranger Things season 4 is officially happening! Last summer, Netflix signed series creators the Duffer brothers up to a nine-figure deal that includes making sure we’ll revisit Dustin, Mike et al. We’ll see them leave Hawkins and go …well, elsewhere. It’s not clear exactly where yet, but certainly they’ll stray outside of Hawkins when the hit series returns to the streaming service, as revealed previously in the show’s renewal announcement.

Filming

THR confirms that filming on season 4 will recommence post-shutdown on September 17th in Atlanta. Whether this will actually go ahead will be dependent on the COVID-19 situation at the time, but full safety measures will be utilised during production.

Casting Latest

Brett Gelman, who first appeared in season 2 of and made quite an impact on season 3 as conspiracy nut Murray Bauman, has been made a series regular in season 4, Deadline confirms. So, if you’re a fan of Murray, this should be good news! Still mourning sweet Alexei, though. RIP, you Russian prince.

Episodes

The writers of season 4 have confirmed that the first episode is called “The Hellfire Club” and posted a picture of its script:

Release Date

When will season 4 be released? It looks like we may be waiting a fair while. Netflix gave the nod to 8 new episodes of the sci-fi hit, and that those episodes were supposed to film from January until August, 2020. With a halt on production, season 4 will likely end up streaming in the late months of 2021.

Story

The Duffers have been fairly coy about what will happen in season 4, but revealed they’d be expanding the scope of the show quite a while ago…

“We don’t want to write ourselves in a corner so we try to have these early discussions with the writers just to make sure that we’re setting ourselves up to go in the right direction,” Ross Duffer said in an interview with EW. “We don’t know a lot, but we do know a lot of the big broad strokes. At the end of season two, we knew about Billy. We knew that the Russians were going to come in. We didn’t know the mall and stuff, but again, we know these big broad strokes. That’s sort of where we are in season four. We have the big broad strokes. It’s just now about filling in those lines in the details. We’re pretty excited about where it’s potentially going to go. Again, like we said, it’s going to feel very different than this season. But I think that’s the right thing to do and I think it’ll be exciting.”

Matt Duffer added: “I think the biggest thing that’s going to happen is it’s going to open up a little bit, not necessarily in terms of scale, in terms of special effects, but open up in terms of allowing plot lines into areas outside of Hawkins.”

We’ll keep you posted as we hear more…
