The team behind The CW’s Supergirl series are currently casting for a transgender role, continuing the show’s run as one of the most accepting and admirable series on the telly. Lest we forget that Supergirl has already served up a lesbian romance (between Alex and Maggie) and an allegory for racism (when Kara pre-judged Mon-El because he came from a rival planet to hers, but eventually saw the error of her ways).
A casting call has gone out for a transgender woman in her early 20s, who can be any ethnicity, to play a character called Nia Nal. The character is described thusly in the casting call:
“A confident, wunderkind of a fashionista. Once a political speechwriter, Nia is the newest addition to the Catco investigative reporting team. With her she brings sparkling wit and biting humor but under that banter-y, chic facade, lays a soulful young woman who has much to offer the world. A young ‘Cat Grant’ type.”
Nia will debut in Supergirl season 4, which is slated to arrive on our screens in the autumn of 2018. Positive responses to this casting call have been pouring in on the web, as fans applaud the Supergirl writers for championing diversity once again.
We’ll let you know when the role of Nia is filled, as well as passing on any other Supergirl news that we hear.
