We already knew that the Arrowverse’s team of heroes is set to venture to Gotham City and meet Batwoman later this year as part of their big autumn crossover, but now we know a tantalising extra detail: The CW is actually developing a whole show that revolves around Batwoman.
Variety broke the news about the Batwoman TV series being in development, sharing this summary of the potential show’s plot:
“In the series, Kate Kane, armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
Caroline Dries, who has previously worked on Smallville, The Vampire Diaries and Melrose Place for the network, will serve as a writer and executive producer on the project. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter and Geoff Johns will also serve as executive producers on the Batwoman TV show.
One thing we don’t know is how the series will tackle Batman, Robin and all the other iconic superheroes from Gotham City. Perhaps, as with the occasional links between Supergirl and Superman, we will sparingly get to see other iconic Gotham-based characters showing up in this series.
It also remains to be seen whether Batwoman’s home city is positioned on the same ‘Earth’ as any of the other shows on The CW. The characters from Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends Of Tomorrow are set to meet Batwoman later this year, but we don’t know yet whether there will be any dimension-hopping required to make that happen.
If the Batwoman series makes it through development, it will debut on our screens in 2019. We’ll keep you posted as more news comes to light.
