American network ABC has opted to renew one of its newest series, The Good Doctor, for a second season. This should hardly come as a big surprise, since The Good Doctor has been a ratings smash for ABC. In fact, it’s their most-watched new show in 13 years.
If you’re unfamiliar, The Good Doctor is a medical drama with a hopeful tone, centred on a savant autistic surgeon named Dr. Shaun Murphy (played by Bates Motel actor Freddie Highmore). House alum David Shore developed the series with Korean actor Daniel Dae Kim, inspired by a Korean series of the same name. Here in the UK, The Good Doctor is shown on Sky Living. Season 1 is still airing, and will run for a total of 18 episodes.
It’s always a big show of confidence when a network renews a show before its first season has finished airing. In a statement, ABC’s president Channing Dungey said this about the renewal:
“The Good Doctor’s message of inclusiveness resonates with our viewers and is a hallmark of what we aim to accomplish here at ABC.This series has quickly joined the zeitgeist and broken records in the competitive television landscape. We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Shaun Murphy will be back for another season.”
We’ll bring you more news on The Good Doctor season 2 as we hear it.
