Holy forking shirtballs. Here’s some good news: NBC has renewed The Good Place for its fourth season. But can the show’s fourth run bring The Good Place back on track after a wobbly-at-times third season?
Don’t get us wrong. This is one of those rare shows when we love the entire cast – Kristen Bell’s Eleanor, William Jackson Harper’s Chidi, Jameela Jamil’s Tahani, D’Arcy Carden’s Jannet, Manny Jacinto’s Jason and Ted Danson’s Michael are all brilliant – and we would happily watch them interact endlessly.
But it’s hard to deny that the third season hasn’t been the show’s best work. Moving so much of the action back into the mortal world, eschewing the afterlife in favour of the ‘soul squad’, has had mixed results. For every brilliant moment (Chidi going mad with chilli, for example), there’s been a slightly nagg one (e.g. the whole episode spent meeting Jason’s family).
So, yes, we are obviously happy to see The Good Place season 4 getting the official go ahead from NBC. And we can’t wait to see it on Netflix when it comes to the UK. But the golden days of season 1 feel like a long while ago, and we’re hoping that the next overhaul to the status quo has less mixed results.
We’ll bring you more news as we hear it.
