The comedy quartet’s stage show began in 1994 and the TV show ran for three series and one Christmas special on BBC Two between 1999 and 2002.

Pemberton commented: “We’re so proud of it – we don’t want to risk tarnishing it.”

He added: “Perhaps for the 20th anniversary, the four of us will just stay in, get the box set and watch it on the sofa by ourselves!”

The Benidorm star also joked about his current career plan: “I wrote two episodes of the last series of Whitechapel. My scheme is to hook myself into a cast as an actor, then wait around until I’m asked to write for the show. That’s my career plan. So far, so good.”

Series 6 of Benidorm, starring Pemberton as Mick Garvey, is out on DVD this week.
