The Inception star will play “a charismatic leader who presents a unique opportunity to Tommy (Cillian Murphy)”.

Six new episodes begin filming later this month and will air on BBC Two this autumn, with Murphy and co-star Helen McCrory both returning.

Set in the lawless streets of post-war Birmingham on the cusp of the 1920s, Series 1 achieved a consolidated average audience of 2.4 million viewers (9.6%) and concluded on BBC Two last October.

Written by creator Steven Knight, Series 2 will see the Shelby family “expand their empire as the 1920s begin to roar”.
