True Detective season 3 has begun, on HBO in the USA and Sky Atlantic on this side of the pond. As such, talk has already turned to whether there will be a fourth season. Which leads us to creator Nic Pizzolatto and his “wild” idea.
Thus far, each season of True Detective has focused on different investigators: Season 1 had Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, season 2 had Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams, and now season 3 has Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff. Will the fourth season follow the same formula or shoot for something fresh?
Nic Pizzolatto said this to Entertainment Weekly, when asked if he had an idea for season 4:
“Yeah, and it’s wild. It’s really, really wild. Where do you even go after this [season]? I just had a lead character who’s 35, 45 and 70 all at the same time and this mystery that has to reach false resolutions and keep going into the future without cheating the audience and all these complicated structural elements. But I have an idea that’s kind of crazy. I think it needs to percolate for a while. I was looking to do another series, maybe a movie, in the meantime, but yeah. I have an idea…”
Answers on the back of a postcard, then, folks! What is the big idea for season 4? We’ll place our wild guess in the direction of ‘Avengers-style detective team up with season 1-3’s surviving characters’.
We’ll let you know as we hear more.
