ITV has axed The Halcyon after just one season.

From the producers of Downton Abbey, the period drama launched in January and told the story of a bustling and glamorous five star hotel in 1940 at the centre of London society and a world at war.

The cast of the eight-part series included Steven Mackintosh (Luther), Olivia Williams (The Sixth Sense), Kara Tointon (Mr Selfridge), Alex Jennings (The Queen), Matt Ryan (Arrow), Hermione Corfield (Pride and Prejudice And Zombies) and Mark Benton (Eddie The Eagle).

An ITV spokesperson told The Sun: “ITV regularly considers the range of dramas we commission to ensure the right ­balance. It does mean on occasions we have to take tough decisions, and not all drama can be recommissioned. We are really pleased so many people enjoyed The Halcyon and we are proud of what the series achieved.”

They added: “We’d like to thank The Halcyon production team and actors and everyone at Left Bank Pictures for their hard work.”
