Willow sequel series uncertain at Disney+

Ron Howard, who directed the original movie for Lucasfilm back in 1988, has revealed that the series is still in limbo at the streaming service…

Last summer we heard the surprising news that a Willow prequel series was in the works at Disney+, but since then things have been really, really quiet.

“There are some really serious discussions going on with Jon Kasdan, who was one of the writers of Solo, who kept hounding me about Willow the whole time we were shooting and also hounding Kathy Kennedy,” original Willow director Ron Howard said at the time. “We’re in discussions about developing a Willow television show for the Disney+. And I think it’d be a great way to go. In fact, George [Lucas] always talked about the possibility of a Willow series, and it’d be great and more intimate, and built around that character and some of the others. And Jon Kasdan has, I think, an inspired take on it and it could be really, really cool.”

As for whether Warwick Davis would return to reprise his role, Howard said this: “Warwick will be in it. Warwick is so cool and so good and he’s such a good actor that I really hope we get the chance to see the mature Willow in action.”

Now, Howard has been cornered and asked just where that Willow TV series is, and why it’s taking so long to happen. He had this to say:

“We’re working on it, it’s not greenlit, but I was just on the phone today discussing it with Jonathan who has written the scripts,” Howard told Variety. “It’s in serious development, but there’s nothing to announce quite yet.”

Some good news in there, that at least some scripts have been written, but that it still hasn’t been given the go-ahead seems a little less encouraging…
