Zack Snyder had plans for a big screen female Robin

Zack Snyder has revealed a few tidbits of information about the DC Extended Universe film franchise that he helped to create, including the fact that he intended to bring Carrie Kelley’s Robin into the fold at some point.

Snyder was instrumental in getting DC’s shared universe of films off the ground, directing Man Of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice before departing Justice League halfway through production due to a family tragedy. Joss Whedon stepped in to finish the team-up movie, and at the moment it seems like Snyder is not rushing onto another DC project.

Snyder maintains an active presence on social media, however, and he has been using Vero in recent days to share a few fun facts about the DC movie universe. When one fan was talking about a deleted scene from Suicide Squad, speculating that the Joker had killed the Jason Todd version Robin, Snyder stepped in and said “Richard”.

The implications of this one-word comment were clear: the deceased Robin whose costume remains encased in the Batcave in Batman V Superman isn’t Jason Todd, who is often involved in death-and-return storylines in the comics and other adaptations; rather, it’s the original Richard ‘Dick’ Grayson version who was killed by the Joker.

Following on from this revelation, another fan asked if Dick Grayson would have stayed dead if Snyder had brought all of his DC film ideas to fruition. Snyder wrote, “stay dead… till Carrie”. In the realm of Robins, the name Carrie can only refer to one thing: Carrie Kelly, the female Robin who appeared in Frank Miller’s gritty graphic novels, beginning with The Dark Knight Returns.

Given that Snyder is a big fan of Miller’s DC output, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that Carrie Kelley was a part of Snyder’s plans for the DC film universe. But still, it would’ve been cool to see Carrie on screen, in what would have been her first live-action appearance.

It’s unclear at the moment whether Snyder will return to making DC movies, but if he does, we hope he comes back to this idea. It would it be fun for comic book fans to see this character brought to life, and it would also provide a strong female role model for fans to look up to.

We’ll bring you more DC news as we hear it.
