Homestuck the Animated Pilot : What we know so far

Surprised doesn’t begin to describe the atmosphere amongst fans when an animated pilot for Homestuck was announced

Homestuck, the interactive webcomic with over 100,000 more words than the King James’ Bible, has garnered a dedicated audience since its launch in 2009.

Following this, there have been multiple fan projects building on the already dense world. This includes multiple comics for enthusiasts to delve into after completing Andrew Hussie’s canoncical story. Homestuck‘s creator crowdfunded $750,000 in one day to fund a video game adaptation of his story in 2014, so what does adapting to another medium mean for Homestuck and its fans over 15 years since the webcomic first launched?

The announcement on Spindlehorse’s YouTube channel is currently approaching 1.5 million views. The studio gained traction since founder and animator known as Vivziepop was picked up by A24 and Prime Video to create the popular animated series Hazbin Hotel, with season 2 set to release later this year.

Who’s in Homestuck?

The current cast includes the webcomic’s composer and developer of hit video games Undertale and Delatrune, Toby Fox. He’ll be reprising his role voice-acting as John Egbert. Brandon Jay (Sword Art Online) will also be starring alongside Adam McArthur (Star vs. The Forces of Evil) and Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Sonic the Hedgehog).

Hussie will be writing the episode alongside Skye Henwood, who previously worked in the animation department on Spindlehorse projects such as Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss.

The story of Homestuck, which begins with a video game being sent to John Egbert before the apocalypse seems to occur, is both complex and beloved. The comments on the announcement trailer paint a mixed picture. Some celebrate their favourite studio taking on their favourite story, others are unsure an animated series could capture the magic of the story that’s over 8,000 (web) pages long. From joyful to doubtful, all fans appear to await the pilot with great anticipation.
