Lady Bird is currently enjoying a critical and commercial success, including award nominations for writer, director and Mistress America star Greta Gerwig. However, it appears Gerwig’s not done with the world that she’s created in Lady Bird just yet.
Gerwig has explained how she would like to take inspiration from author Elena Ferrante’s four-part book series for her ongoing project. Instead of Naples, Gerwig’s vision will take place and focus on her home town of Sacramento, stating that Lady Bird was just a little piece of her beloved hometown and she wants to show people more.
Little detail was given about how far along Gerwig is in her development of this anthology of films. She does imply on the A24 Podcast that she hopes the four films will become part of a canonical Lady Bird cinematic universe that would be akin to Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise series or Kevin Smith’s New Jersey based Askewniverse.
This is not the only Oscar-nominated film that has been considered for the sequel treatment. Get Out’s director Jordan Peele has expressed his enjoyment working on the film and the scope for a story that is left to tell within the universe of the film. Peele has added to this, the worry that he would only commit to filming a sequel if he could guarantee that it would elevate the first film.
