Idris Elba has confirmed that his acclaimed BBC crime drama, Luther, is close to making it to the big screen – as creator Neil Cross is presently writing the script…
Elba was speaking to The Independent when he was asked about a transfer from the small to silver screen for his iconic detective. “We are really advancing on getting a movie version [of the show] up on the screen,” he said.
“Neil [Cross] is beavering away on writing this thing, and I think the remit for the film is to scale it up.”
The actor mentioned that Luther “all the ingredients to echo” such films as David Fincher’s 90s thriller, Se7en.
“I think what we would like to do is use that blueprint to create Luther: The Film. It will be more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther… essentially we just want to try to take it to a much bigger audience and scale, and perhaps international as well.”
Actors asked about the possibility of film adaptations of their TV series are usually never this positive, so it seems highly likely we’ll receive more news about a big screen adventure for John Luther soon.
We’ll keep you posted.
The fifth series of Luther premieres on New Year’s Day.
