The fate of the show was in doubt after it’s creator was fired…

FX has officially made the move to renew its Sons Of Anarchy spinoff series Mayans MC for season 3. Season 2 is just about to wrap up stateside.

The project was created by Sons Of Anarchy maestro Kurt Sutter and Lowriders writer Elgin James to relocate the motorcycle club drama to the Mexican border after a successful run of SOA with Charlie Hunnam leading the pack between 2008-2014.

It wasn’t certain if Mayans MC season 3 would end up happening after Sutter was fired as co-showrunner last month, but James will run season 3 by himself going forward.

“We’re happy to continue telling the story of Mayans M.C. with our partners at Fox 21 and excited that Elgin James has earned the opportunity to become the series’ showrunner,” said Nick Grad, president of original programming for FX Entertainment, in a statement. “Kurt Sutter identified and chose Elgin as his partner on the show from the outset and Elgin has been instrumental to the success of the series, leveraging his experience and creative vision to make Mayans M.C. with this incredible cast, crew and creative team.”

Sutter posted a comment about his departure online in October: “It’s been reported by writers, producers, cast and crew that my absence and subsequent behaviour when there, has only created confusion, chaos, hostility and is perceived as abandonment. Or at least that’s how Disney has interpreted it. I’m sure it’s true.”

Mayans MC stars JD Pardo, Clayton Cardenas, Edward James Olmos, Sarah Bolger, Michael Irby, Carla Baratta, Antonio Jaramillo, Raoul Max Trujillo, Richard Cabral, Danny Pino and Emilio Rivera, and will start airing next autumn. BBC Two carries the series in the UK.
