Netflix asks the question: What the F**k is Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square? and gives us a trailer by way of an answer.
Coming to Netflix on November 22 is Christmas on the Square. It’s a musical and a Dolly Parton project; what exactly is it though? Thanks to a new trailer, we now know more than we did. Specifically:
…musical extravaganza: directed and choreographed by Debbie Allen, featuring 14 original songs by Dolly Parton and starring Christine Baranski (Mamma Mia!, Chicago). You simply cannot miss it. Christmas On The Square follows small town “Scrooge”, Regina Fuller (Christine Baranski), as she’s visited by a rhinestone-bedazzled angel (Dolly) who guides her on a musical journey of redemption. Will this stingy property owner evict the entire town of Fullerville on Christmas Eve, or will her greed give way to the Christmas spirit?
The trailer makes it clear Christmas on the Square is very much Christmas Carol meets It’s a Wonderful Life with songs. Lots of songs and no doubt a happy ending. If you think you recognise the name, but don’t know why, director and choreographer Debbie Allen once starred in Fame.
Here at Cultbox we’ve a weakness for the odd musical, and might even put Dolly’s Nine to Five on our guilty pleasure list of fun films to rewatch. We’ll certainly be giving it a look. Don’t forget it’s on this Sunday!
