After the announcement that Orange is the New Black will conclude next year Netflix and creator Jenji Kohan are already considering a potential sequel of sorts..
The news was confirmed by Lionsgate TV Group chairman Kevin Beggs at Netflix’s earnings call with reporters yesterday where he said, “We’re really proud of the long run that Orange Is the New Black had. It remains one of Netflix’s most-watched shows. We’re ending on a high note. Keep in mind we own that series and will be distributing it for years to come.”
“We’re already in discussions and, when the timing is right, we’ll talk further with Jenji about a potential sequel.”
The Hollywood Reporter have cited sources close to the studio confirming that discussion of a sequel/spin-off has been underway for a while now, though nothing is set in stone as of yet.
After the most recent series aired executive Tara Herrmann told THR that the reason a spin-off hasn’t been made already is that they don’t want to be seen as “robbing from the mothership,” she said. “We want people to pay attention to the show we’re making, not a musical number with Piper and Alex. But that could happen in the future, who knows!”
