The HBO show will be based on Ingmar Bergman’s classic 70s miniseries…
A new version of Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes From a Marriage is in the works at HBO. It will be a limited series, just like the original 1973 Swedish show that was later fashioned into a lengthy film, and Oscar Issac (Ex Machina) and Michelle Williams (Fosse/Verdon) will star. Hagai Levi (The Affair) will direct all the planned episodes.
In the original miniseries of Scenes from a Marriage, Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson starred as divorce lawyer Marianne and her husband Johan respectively, following their story over a period of 10 years. The new adaptation will “reexamine the original miniseries’ iconic depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple” according to THR.
Bergman’s Scenes From a Marriage was very influential, and directors like Woody Allen and Richard Linklater have cited it as an inspiration behind some of their films.
