Ozark season 4 storms to the top of the latest Nielsens

Ozark season 4 has stormed to the top of the latest Nielsen chart

We’ve just finished analysing the Nielsen data for 17-23 January, and while it’s no surprise to see the latest Ozark season 4 top the table, the margin between it and second place Archive 81 is immense. Last week’s leader Cobra Kai has only managed third place. Last week, we predicted:

Ozark and Archive 81 will top the chart. We can add Cheer and Too Hot to Handle to the mix as well. We’ll be watching out for Boba Fett,

Before we look at how well we did, a quick caveat — we lent our supercomputers to the weather prediction effort for Storm Eunice, and did these calculations on a computer inspired by a certain BBC children’s programme made entirely of cardboard, sticky back plastic and empty washing up liquid bottles. The team had great fun building it, but we wait to see how well their analysis holds up!

First up, the data.

The Nielsen data for January 17-23 2022

Usual notes: this is US data for five weeks ago, we add the columns marked ‘*’.

Ozark season 4 almost hits three billion minutes!

Yes, the latest instalment of Ozark was binged for nearly three billion minutes. BUT, this was only season 4 part 1, a mere 7 episodes! If we estimate 80% (it’s always 80%!) watched the new episodes (as we saw last time, people watch other seasons, and the Netflix data shows all three previous seasons being watched), then over 5.5 million people in the US watched all 7 episodes in the first few days of release (Netflix releases Friday, Nielsen measures Monday – Sunday). It’s a big number, however you look at it.

What else happened?

Archive 81 also broke through the billion minutes, and Boba Fett picked up new viewers as well. Emily in Paris is just hanging on, and The Witcher still gets mid-table.

What do we expect next?

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window:

A quick look at the following week’s data from Netflix show us Ozark still riding high, Archive 81 falling back and the wonderfully named The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window season 1 doing well. We think it’s farewell to Emily in Paris, and perhaps Cheer, while we still expect Boba Fett to make an impact. The Sinner season 4 also arrives that week, so plenty to look forward to, and we’ll be back with our unique take on the numbers.
